In 2004, Deontay Wilder joined Tuscaloosa Central High School before enrolling at Shelton State Community College, where he focused more on pursuing basketball and football careers. His academic standings as well as his family health problems could not allow him to proceed with the sports, especially at college level. His oldest daughter Naieya was born with spina bifidia, a medical condition, which forced him quit football and basketball and focus his energies on boxing. He began his boxing career in 2005, and by 2007 he had won against top fighters both in the US championships and the National Golden Gloves, beating Isiah Thomas, a highly touted boxer in the US, and David Thompson from Brooklyn, New York.
Wilder continued to thrive in the boxing industry, defeating Quantis Graves twice at the Olympic trials. In early 2008, things proved better for him when he defeated Rakhim Chakhiyev, a Gold Medalist from Russia. Other boxers he beat during that time include Rafael Lima, Jorge Quiñonez and Deivis Julio.
Deontay Wilder turned his boxing into a profession on 15 November 2008. In his third contest, he fought Bermane Stiverne for the WBC world heavyweight championship in January 2015, winning by unanimous decision, making history by becoming the first America heavyweight champion in nine years. Since then he has defended his crown three times by beating Eric Molina, Johann Duhaupas and Artur Szpika in June 2015, September 2015 and January 2016 respectively.
So far in his boxing career, he has under his belt 36 wins, 35 of which he has won by KO, earning in every fight, which has contributed hugely to his net worth. Although he lost once to Osmai Acosta in the finals, Deontay was still an armature at that time. He has never suffered a loss since he became a professional boxer. He is listed among the top 10 boxers by many boxing associations in the US.
In his personal life, Deontay married Jessica Scales in 2009. The couple has two daughters and tow sons, one of whom Deontay was arrested for domestic strangulation, but the felony was not consistent with the reputation he had built, and the victim accepted his apology.
