Inside Dave Myers and Si King's 'joyous and creative friendship': From leaning on his Hairy Biker co

July 2024 · 4 minute read

Dave Myers passed away at the age of 66 on Wednesday following his battle with cancer, his heartbroken co-star Si King announced.

The late chef revealed that he was receiving treatment for cancer in May 2022 and bravely kept the public up to date with his progress in a series of emotional TV specials.

Si and Dave have been the nations favourites chefs since they started presenting the Hairy Bikers’ Cookbook on BBC TV from 2004.

Throughout their 30-year friendship, they have travelled all across the world together on their motorbikes to cook together.

And like the famous duo Ant and Dec, Si and Dave have always remained stood in the same order, with Dave to Si’s left.

The cooking pair first met in 1990 on the set of Catherine Cookson’s TV drama The Gambling Man where Si was an assistant director and Dave was head of prosthetics, hair and make-up – and they instantly bonded.

Si previously told the Independent: ‘At lunch most of the crew were ordering salads and mineral water at the local pub, while I was having a curry and two pints of larger.

When Dave came in he took one look at my lunch and went, “I’ll have what he’s having!” Pretty quickly we discovered that we both loved eating, drinking and motorcycling.’

In total, the cooking icons have produced more than 30 books together and have documented their love for food on Hairy Bikers’ Food Tour Of Britain.

After Si suffered with a brain aneurysm in 2014, the pair also embarked on a health kick and published two healthy eating cookbooks – following their weight loss journey.

The duo filmed their final series shortly before Dave passed, travelling around Britain from Scotland to Devon.

Earlier this month, Si praised Dave for his determination to continue filming their BBC Two series amid his cancer treatment.

Si admitted that the most recent series ‘was particularly special’ and one they will ‘always remember’, a month before Dave died.

Speaking to The Evening Standard, Si said: ‘It’s a series that we will always remember, not that we won’t remember others.

‘We are very privileged to do what we do and I think this one was particularly special in general because of Dave’s health and his sheer and utter determination and love for what he does.

‘Especially to continue to do it while he was having treatment took remarkable courage and energy – and adds to why Dave and I will not forget it.’

Si announced that sad news on Thursday, revealing to fans that he, Dave’s family and friends were by his side to the last second.

In an emotional statement, Simon wrote on Instagram: ‘In his heart-wrenching statement Si said: ‘Hi everyone, I’m afraid I bear some sad news.

‘Most of you will know Dave has been fighting cancer for the past couple of years.

‘Last night, on 28th February 2024, with Lili, Dave’s wife, his family, close friend David and myself by his side, he passed away peacefully at home.

‘All who knew Dave are devastated at his passing. His beloved wife brought him such happiness as did her children, Iza and Sergiu who Dave loved like his own.

‘Personally, I am not sure I can put into words on how I feel at the moment.

‘My best friend is on a journey that for now, I can’t follow. I will miss him every day and the bond and friendship we shared over half a lifetime.

‘I wish you god’s speed brother; you are and will remain a beacon in this world. See you on the other side. Love ya.’
