John attended Torrey Pines High School and during his time there played basketball, baseball, as well as football. After matriculating, he attended Stanford University where he played football and baseball, coached in the former by NFL Hall of Fame Inductee Bill Walsh.
In the 1992 Major League Baseball Draft, Lynch was drafted by the Florida Marlins in the second round as a pitcher, playing as a member of the Erie Sailors for two seasons in the minor leagues. The following year, he was drafted in the third round of the 1993 NFL Draft by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, and played his first 11 seasons with the team. At the time he joined, Tampa Bay was one of the worst teams in the league, in fact during his first three years, the team reached a stretch of 10 loss seasons. The team then improved in the late 1990s to the early 2000s which he was partly due to an aggressive defense, and in 2002 he then helped the team win Super Bowl XXXVII. In the following season after their Super Bowl win, he was released by the Buccaneers, due to salary cap reasons. Despite this, his net worth increased significantly during his time with them.
In 2004, John signed a contract with the Denver Broncos, and the following year he helped the team reach the playoffs but the Broncos were defeated by the Steelers in the AFC Championship Game. In 2006, he became the captain of the team, and stayed with them until 2008, then left the team due to a lack of playing time. He subsequently signed a one year deal with the New England Patriots for $1.5 million, however, he was released after just a few weeks, and sothen announced his retirement from football.
Lynch then joined “NFL on Fox” as a color commentator, working on the show with Kevin Burkhardt and Chris Rose.
In 2017, Lynch was named the general manager of the San Francisco 49ers, and thanks to this opportunity, his net worth increased even further.
For his personal life, it is known that John is married to Linda Allred who is the sister of former NFL tight end John Allred. The two John’s are close friends, but had a run-in during 1997 that nearly knocked Allred out.
